Landfilling and Incineration

All the things we use—furniture, clothing, electronics—are made from natural resources. And once they’re no longer useful, they become waste that must be managed. The dominant linear model of “extract–produce–consume–discard” is unsustainable. How long can we continue like this?

Any attempt to simply “eliminate” waste is a short-term fix—not a real solution. The waste we produce today is a burden we leave for future generations. It’s time to rethink this throwaway culture.

Ask Yourself:

  • Have you ever considered how many resources it takes to produce a product?

  • Do we have infinite resources on Earth?

  • How does something become waste?

At this stop, you’ll see what it takes to produce an upholstered armchair—and be encouraged to reflect on items like jeans, smartphones, and more.

  • Raw Material Extraction:
The carbon footprint of an upholstered armchair is about 43 kg of CO₂, which would take 4.7 mature trees one year to absorb.

  • Production:
Transport accounts for 25% of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions. One-third of an armchair’s carbon footprint comes from energy use during production—using renewable energy makes a difference!

  • Waste:
In our country, 60% of household waste still ends up in landfills or incinerators. Incineration emits even more CO₂ than coal-fired power plants.

  • November 8 – World Anti-Incineration Day
